Chapter Ten

Jack was not a happy man. Arms folded across his chest, he stood just inside the front door of Logan’s new house, waiting impatiently for him to finish speaking with the foreman of his construction crew.

It had been several days since he and Logan had had their little chat at the pub. Jack thought they’d reached an understanding that night, but every day that passed saw his sister looking progressively more haunted.

If this was Logan’s idea of making Bailey happy, he was doing a lousy job of it. Which was exactly what he planned on telling Logan, if the man would ever get around to wrapping up his interminable discussion on building codes.

Jack shifted restlessly and glanced once more around the marbled entrance hall at the stained glass windows, soaring ceilings, and a huge winding staircase with a gleaming oak banister which he could easily imagine Kelsie sliding down. He snorted quietly. The place was huge, he could almost as easily imagine her riding a pony through the hallway, and on up the stairs to her bedroom.

The question was, was that vision—minus the pony, of course—anything like what Logan was imagining?

The house was a beauty, that much was certain. Situated on a crest overlooking a lake, it offered five acres of beautiful grounds, stone pathways leading to spring-fed ponds, formal English gardens with gazebos, fountains and courtyards.

It had the kind of Gone with the Wind style elegance that could make one think of sultry summer nights and mint juleps. It was also a house that his sister had been enamored of since childhood. Jack wasn’t sure if Logan was aware of that fact, or if his buying the house of her dreams was in the order of a huge, cosmic coincidence. Either way, it gave Jack hope, but hope was not enough. He wanted action, and so far he’d seen precious little of that.

“So, Jack, what can I do for you?” Logan asked, rubbing his hands together to get them warm. The house was unheated at present and, thanks in part to all the marble, cold as a crypt.

Good thing Logan was loaded—he’d need to be in order to afford the upkeep on this place.

“What’s all this I’ve been hearing about you buying this house for Bailey, Logan? Any truth to the rumors?” Jack watched as the smile ran away from Logan’s face, leaving behind surprise, annoyance and something that looked suspiciously like guilt.

“Well, no, that’s not exactly how it happened.” Logan ran a hand through his hair, looking unsettled. “Look, Jack, I’ll be honest with you. I put a bid on this place several months ago, when it first came on the market. At that point, I was still just toying with the thought of moving back here. I had no idea if Bailey and I—It was just, when I saw it was for sale, it...well, it seemed like a good idea, at the time.”

“Aye, I figured as much,” Jack muttered. Yeah, that was old news. He hadn’t made police captain by being ignorant.
